Hearth Dutch Oven 3.5 qt
The Hearth Dutch Oven 3.5 qt is the small pot: 22 cm across (8.7 in), 11 cm tall, 3.3 liters, 4.1 kg (9.0 lb) with its lid. A 20 cm round of bread fits inside, which makes it the size for a no-knead loaf, a braise for two, or a pot of beans. Unlike the Hearth skillets, this pot is enameled inside as well as out, so there is no seasoning to build and no bare iron to oil. It comes in three enamel colors with a stainless steel knob on the lid.
The walls are 4 mm cast iron, and the lid has a ring of drip points on its underside that return condensation to the food during a long, low braise. Two wide loop handles take oven mitts. Oven-safe to 260 °C (500 °F) with the lid on, and it works on induction. Hand wash, dry it fully, and store it with the lid ajar so the inside stays dry.
Questions
What size loaf fits in the 3.5 qt? A 20 cm round, which is a loaf from about 400 g of flour. For a larger boule or a stew for four, the Hearth Dutch Oven 5.5 qt is 26 cm across.
Does the enamel interior need seasoning? No. The inside is vitreous enamel, so it is washed like a plate: hot water, mild soap, dry fully. Only the Hearth skillets and grill pan have a bare cooking surface that wants oil.
Will it sit on the Bench Trivet? Yes. The Bench Trivet is 20 cm across and holds every Hearth pot up to the 7.5 qt, so the 3.5 qt goes straight from the oven to the table on it.
